Make winter end soon đ
From Brick lane to Brixton with a pitstop in Normandy
Turns out I was wrongâŠ.It still feels like winter.
In my defense, at least there are signs of spring everywhere, especially in the produce. Forced rhubarb, rainbow chard, asparagus and more. You may say, that all sounds nice but I never actually cook those vegetables. To be honest, neither did I. But, after going to so many Wednesdays events (including one where one of our members tried to kimchi rhubarb), I am inspired to try.
Speaking of events, our spring calendar is shaping up handsomely (whether the temperatures cooperate or not). In April, catch us exploring Teochew cuisine in Brick lane, live-fire whole animal cookery in Brixton and further ahead in June, its field trip time as we head out to Normandy for pressed duck too (yes Normandy, France!).
Read to the end for all the deets + an interview with one of Wednesdays most active members and a save the date for a big milestone coming up soon: our 100th event. Iâm getting super excited for spring⊠but please make winter end soon đ
Dhruv, Wednesdays
Wednesday 1 April: First Look at One Rice (Brick Lane)
One Rice is a new Chinese entrant serving Teochew style cuisine in a city full of Cantonese style restaurants. This hidden gem offers a relatively large menu with braised items, claypot crab porridge, fried chicken wings and rice and noodle dishes.
Saturday 11 April: First Look at Whole Beast (Brixton)
The menu at Whole Beast, a newly opened restaurant in Brixton, reads as if an American barbecue pit master and a St. John chef got drunk together and created their wildest fantasy dishes đ„”
A friendly reminder that anyone can join any of our events without a membership to start. Simply click on the event link, buy a ticket and come see what Wednesdays is all about.

Member Spotlight: Christy C
Christy joined her first Wednesdays event in December 2024. Since then, sheâs been on a tear attending over 18 events. Iâve had the pleasure of getting to know Christy since then and was keen to find out, what made her join Wednesdays and why does she keep coming back? Her responses blew me away and reminded me of Wednesdayâs mission statement: to make people feel alive, or as she says to feel that âeverything rushâ. Thank you Christy for your support and bringing bold, adventurous energy to Wednesdays đ

You mentioned you didnât plan to sign up for a membership when you came to your first Wednesdays event. Youâve now been 18 Wednesdays events. How did that happen !?
I discovered Wednesdays through a friend who signed up for the collab with Swilipino because she was a big fan of Tintinâs cooking. [After the event] I was initially hesitant to join [Wednesdays] but I had very fond memories of the Swilipino collab, and I felt like a community like this is exactly where a foodie and a yapper like me can shine!
Youâre one of the most adventurous people I know. Where does that come from?
A lot of that adventurousness comes from my family. I grew up in Hong Kong where my family and I would check out a new restaurant at least once a week. Around the dinner table, they would always say âéŁćŸæŻçŠâ, which loosely translates to âhaving a good appetite is a blessingâ.
My mum even once risked her life because she couldnât resist lobsters at a seafood buffet despite having a crustacean allergy (do not be like her, allergies are serious!).
When I moved halfway across the world over a decade ago, I embarked on this adventure on my own and have met many wonderful people along the way. Now that Iâm a regular at Wednesdays, Iâm spreading this sense of adventure as the gospel to people who arenât yet part of this amazing community.
Anything else youâd like us to know or share with folks?
Even though I have the appetite of an entire village and love ticking off restaurants from my list, what really ignites me is using food as a lens for understanding my reality and I particularly enjoy doing so from other peopleâs experience and expertise with food.
I believe that adventurousness within Wednesdays members extends into other aspects of life too, which reminds me of an excerpt from one of my favourite books:
âThere was a young woman holding two takeout iced coffees topped with swirls of cream and chocolate chips. She told us she was looking forward to the sugar rush. Actually, she said, it was an everything rush that she was looking forward to. That was a great project to aim for in life, to be an Everything Rushâ.
So here I am, 18 events later, still seeking that Everything Rush in what and how I eat with Wednesdays, because food is only as good as the people you share it with!
