Northeastern Thai: Esarn Kheaw
After a smashing evening at Singburi last week, the Thai adventures continue, this time on Wednesday March 22nd in Shepherds Bush at Esarn Kheaw for home style flavours of Northeastern Thailand. Thanks to fellow member Putt, a frequent patron at Esarn Kheaw, for suggesting and co-hosting this event!
Homestyle Northeastern Thai: Esarn Kheaw Wednesday March 22nd
Esarn Kheaw is the first and oldest Northeastern Thai restaurant in London. After arriving in London from Thailand more than 50 years ago, Esarn Kheaw founders Mr. Mongkol Puntar and his wife started out serving traditional Esarn dishes to friends and family over dinner parties as “a way to feel close to home while being in the UK.” In 1992, Esarn Kheaw was founded. Three decades later its still going strong.
Esarn food is distinguished by the regional agricultural focus. Mr. Puntar describes cooking in Esarn as “usually based on eating what you grow or what you have at home or on the land.” In the Esarn region, he explains, "All the vegetables, herbs, and spices are found in our back gardens or on our land, and we use all our resources available to us in the area to produce our dishes."
Together with Putt and the Esarn Kheaw team, we have curated a set menu for this event that highlights some of the best Esarn dishes (with varying spice levels!)
At Esarn, Mr. Puntar says the dishes are “a reminder to me and my family of where we come from. I hope you all enjoy your food and I hope it transports you to Thailand.”
MENU HIGHLIGHTS
ไส่กรอกอีสาน Esarn Sausages (Homemade Esarn sausages with minced pork and rice. Complimented with salted peanuts, pickled ginger and chilli.)
ยำทะเล Yum Seafood Salad (Mussels, prawns and squid tossed in a Thai style dressing with chilli oil paste, lemon juice, fresh Thai herbs, fish sauce and fresh chillis.)
เสือร้องให้ Tiger Cry (Grilled sirloin strips servied with a spicy chili sauces)
ไข่ลูกเขย “Son in Law” Eggs (Deep fried golden eggs with a caramelised tamarind sauce, garnished with deep fried garlic, shallots and coriander)
