First Look: Janda Diner Wednesday June 19th
Janda refers to the Malay term for a female divorcee “who looks good and cooks well,” explains Zura Ahmad, co-founder of Janda Diner, a newly opened Malaysian restaurant in Peckham.
The woman in their logo is inspired by a Malay 60s primadonna Zaiton with spicy Janda DNA, with “Malay classic beauty, who cooks seductive-looking food.”
While there may be no Jandas on the team, the food at Janda Diner has its own tantalising appeal.
Tired of beef rendang? How about cockle rendang instead, or Terung Sambal Neraka (grilled aubergine coated in signature ‘Sambal Neraka’). The menu changes frequently with new dishes appearing left and right. Ikan Bakar Air Asam reads a recent Instagram post, highlighting a grilled seabass with sour tamarind sauce, the next Char Kuey Teow with fat prawns.
One main stay (and probably their most famous dish): Ayam Goreng Susu, fried milk chicken, made with Sarawak white pepper, condensed milk, garlic and curry leaves🥵
Its no wonder that Janda Diner is quickly seducing South Londoners. “Some nights, we have queues for tables,” says Ahmad. For now, the team is happy serving up Malaysian flavours…. with a side of spicy Janda energy of course ❤🔥
